Mother-Infant Unit: Beginning Your Lives as a Family

After birth, you and your baby will stay in our Mother-Infant Unit at VCU Medical Center Main Hospital. Each of our comfortable rooms have a private bathroom and shower. There’s also a pull-out couch or comfortable recliner for your partner.

We encourage “rooming-in,” where your baby stays by your bedside during your stay. This practice improves bonding. We have learned that babies do much better and parents gain confidence in caring for their babies when they remain together throughout the hospital stay.

All of our nurses are specially trained to assist you with breastfeeding. Our nurses will educate, encourage and support you with your breastfeeding experience. Certified lactation consultants are available for additional support.

We specialize in a family centered approach. This means we provide postpartum care and newborn education for you and your partner.
