Infusion Therapy

Typically, if you need medication delivered through infusion therapy, you’d need to be close to the hospital. But thanks to VCU Health at Home services, you can now receive these hospital-level services in the comfort of your own home if you live in the Richmond area. Our dedicated care team is skilled in providing home-based care to ensure you can live comfortably while receiving treatment.

Infusion Services at Home

Infusion is a way to give medication under the skin or directly into your muscles, spine or bloodstream. And this delivery means medications can have a faster impact.

The medications that can be given at home through infusion services include:

  • Antibiotics
  • Antivirals
  • Biologics
  • Blood factors
  • Chemotherapy
  • Fluids
  • Growth hormones
  • Immune globulin
  • Insulin
  • Nutrition
  • Steroids

Are In-Home Infusion Services Right for Me?

In-home infusion services are particularly helpful for patients who:

  • Have medications they need to take every day or several times per day
  • Have chronic conditions, like inflammatory disorders, ALS, muscular dystrophy, hemophilia and heart failure
  • If appropriate, are willing to administer their own medication

If you are willing to administer your own medication, you will receive training from a skilled nurse to learn how to give yourself your medication. This training will include how to administer the drug as well as how to manage any side effects. The nurse will check back regularly to make sure the infusion site is healthy and educate the patient on possible side effects and how to manage them.
