Your Therapy Team
Your physician, healthcare team, and therapist will create an individualized rehabilitation plan designed to address your unique needs and goals to help you get back to doing the things that matter most to you.
Here’s a quick overview of the differences between each of the disciplines.
- Exercise Physiology is focused on the acute response and chronic adaptation to exercise. ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiologists (ACSM-CEP) provide health education and exercise to assist patients in improving their circulatory, respiratory, and other organ systems in the prevention and management of chronic health conditions.
- Occupational therapy is focused on maximizing function and performance in everyday activities to improve one’s quality of life. Occupational Therapists (OT) and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTA) work with patients on meaningful and important activities (also known as occupations) to improve their health, well-being, and participation in daily life.
- Physical therapy is focused on treating functional issues in mobility, strength, and coordination. Physical Therapists (PT) and Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA) utilize a wide range of techniques to improve functional mobility.
- Recreational therapy is focused on improving an individual’s quality of life through person-centered leisure activities of interest. Certified Recreational Therapy Specialists (CTRS) aim to restore and maintain an individual’s physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual function through recreation and activity-based interventions.
- Speech language pathology is focused on managing communication, thinking, and/or swallowing difficulty. Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) can help patients with unclear speech, trouble with language, and/or voice changes. SLPs can also teach strategies to help with attention, memory, and problem solving. Finally, SLPs may give you exercises/strategies to help you eat, drink, and swallow safely.
