About Us
The Division of Inpatient Psychiatry operates 40 acute beds for multiple specialty programs including geriatric psychiatry, medical psychiatry, mood disorders, schizophrenia, and crisis stabilization.
VCU has the people and the facilities that help us make a difference for thousands of patients a year.
- Our clinics offer treatment and counseling for patients facing a variety of mental illnesses, from mood disorders and psychosis to personality and addictive challenges.
- Partnerships with community providers like the Richmond VA Medical Center (now undergoing major renovations) help us reach more patients in need.
- Our faculty leads the nation in work through Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. Current clinics are on HIV, Neuropsychiatry, Transplant and Hepatology at VCU Medical Center.
- We offer special treatments including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for treatment-resistant depression.
- The VCU psychiatry department has overseen more than 100 clinical trials in innovative treatments for depression, anxiety, psychotic disorders, and children's mental disorders.
- VCU continues to seek new approaches to treatment, such as securing funding to build a new pediatric center dedicated to kids and their psychiatric needs. As part of this dedication to pediatrics, we opened the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU Cameron K. Gallagher Mental Health Resource Center in 2011 to help families navigate the complex system of children’s mental health options.
