Williamsburg, Va. (April 7, 2021) – Starting this week, William & Mary and Williamsburg residents have increased access to comprehensive academic health care services in Williamsburg. A new medical office, located at 332 North Henry St. in Williamsburg, offers services previously located at VCU Health’s 1162 Professional Dr. location, as well as new services for students and community members.
The clinic has 22 exam rooms and is part of a long-term, 10-year strategic partnership between W&M and VCU Health System. It provides students — in conjunction with the on-campus Student Health Center and Counseling Center — more health care services in areas including behavioral health, orthopedics, virtual urgent care and sports medicine.
Called “VCU Health at William & Mary,” the new location also serves local community members and W&M faculty and staff. Primary care services will be available at a later date.
The clinic has created 17 new jobs in the area.
“The pandemic has shown us how essential strong partnerships are to W&M and to Williamsburg — especially in the area of wellbeing,” said W&M President Kathrine A. Rowe. “We are thrilled to partner with VCU Health to offer expanded health services to students and new medical options to faculty, staff and community members. Throughout the last year, our community has committed to pursuing healthy behaviors together, because we share responsibility for the wellbeing of the community. It’s a major step forward for our students to have access to VCU Health’s world-class care.”
VCU Health’s flagship medical center has been providing telehealth appointments to students through the W&M Student Health Center for several months. The academic health system has also conducted COVID-19 prevalence testing for the W&M community at the new clinic location since fall 2020.
“Advancing the health, wellness and well-being of all people we serve is a commitment that VCU and William & Mary share,” said Michael Rao, Ph.D., president of Virginia Commonwealth University and the VCU Health System. “This partnership makes academic health care more accessible to everyone who calls Williamsburg home.”
Student-athletes are another beneficiary of the partnership. VCU Health has been working closely with W&M Athletics to provide sports medicine and orthopedic care to the university’s student-athletes, along with members of its club and intramural sports teams.
The partnership with a third-party health care provider is a first for W&M. This is also the most comprehensive collegiate partnership of its kind for VCU Health, which boasts a vast network of providers that offer a wide range of health care services.
Existing VCU Health patients can continue to see their preferred provider at this new location. New patients looking to schedule an appointment can call (757) 220-1246 or visit vcuhealth.org/williamsburg.
VCU Health at William & Mary is a medical office operated by MCV Physicians, the physician practice group affiliated with VCU Health.
The building is owned by the W&M Real Estate Foundation and leased to the university, which is now subleasing it to VCU Health System.
