The longtime president of VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital is set to retire in June. Liz Martin celebrates a health care career spanning 36 years and countless lives impacted.

Martin started – and spent most of – her 30 plus year career with Riverside Health System, 20 of those years serving as the president of Riverside Tappahannock Hospital. Through her journey, she also held positions leading outpatient services, wellness and fitness, telehealth, care management and served as senior vice president of quality for the health system. However, most of her tenure was spent providing leadership and strategic direction for Tappahannock Hospital and, briefly, a concurrent leadership role at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester.

She joined VCU Health when the health system acquired Tappahannock Hospital. Over the past six years, she has overseen the transition of the hospital and all outpatient clinics to VCU Health, the conversion from Riverside to VCU Health Epic electronic health records, and the significant investment of new service lines like VCU Health Pauley Heart Center, VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, and orthopaedics.

Martin was instrumental in developing the Dr. Jeffery Haskins Scholarship Fund for anyone pursuing a health care degree and committed to serving the Tappahannock community during or after program completion. In addition, she helped create the Jeri Sibley VCU Health Tappahannock Cancer Care Fund to help cancer patients with wellness and beauty services. These enduring programs honor colleagues and friends who left an indelible mark on the Tappahannock Hospital family and community.

Her leadership and expertise are also seen on community boards and organizations, such as the Ledwith-Lewis Free Clinic and the Essex County Chamber of Commerce.  She served and chaired the Essex County School Board as well as the Board of Aylett Country Day School.

“Liz has an impressive resume with an extensive list of accomplishments, but what most people close to her will talk about is her commitment to the service of others. She is not afraid to roll up her sleeves and problem solve in the interest of improving patient care,” said Marlon Levy, M.D., M.B.A., senior vice president of VCU Health Sciences and CEO of VCU Health System. “Liz is a friend to – and a champion for – those around her. She has set a high bar for those who follow.”

Josh Hammond, associate vice president of Ambulatory Operations for VCU Health, will serve as interim president of VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital. He will begin working alongside Martin in April to ensure a smooth transition come June.
