VCU Health hires new vice president to oversee risk management, regulatory affairs

After a national search, Elizabeth Mikula, MSN, RN, CPN, CPHQ, is joining VCU Health System as vice president of regulatory affairs, risk management, and patient-centered services. She will start her new role on Feb. 16.  

In this position, Mikula will be responsible for VCU Health’s overall strategic direction for regulatory accreditation and licensure, risk management, and patient-centered services. The role is responsible for ensuring the health system complies with all complex health care regulations, manages risk effectively, and maintains a high level of patient experience and service culture in line with the VCU Health System mission and vision.

Mikula brings 20 years of experience in a variety of clinical and administrative leadership roles to VCU Health. For the past 11 years, she has held a series of roles with progressive responsibilities at both the facility and division level for HCA Healthcare. She currently serves as a division vice president for quality and patient safety with quality management oversight of 18 hospitals and associated freestanding emergency departments in Virginia, Indiana, and New Hampshire.  

A registered nurse certified in pediatrics, Mikula also brings clinical experience to the role. She served in the pediatric intensive care unit of Georgetown University Hospital, as well as the Children’s National Medical Center Heart Institute, both in Washington, D.C. She earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Virginia and a Master of Science in nursing, leadership and management from The George Washington University and is currently pursuing her MBA here at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Mikula’s service also extends to professional organizations, as she currently is a member of the alumni board for the University of Virginia School of Nursing and the advisory council for the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association Center for Healthcare Excellence. She was recognized by the Becker’s Healthcare ‘Rising Stars’ program in 2023 and received Johnson & Johnson ‘Nurse Innovator Recognition’ in 2018
