VCU Health Cardiology at South Hill expands team with new nurse practitioner

New team member hopes to be a support system of patients, by educating them on a variety of lifestyle changes to improve heart health.

A lady in a white lab coat smiles for the camera. Miki Baird, FNP-C, is the new cardiology nurse practitioner at VCU Health Cardiology at South Hill.

VCU Health Cardiology at South Hill welcomes Miki Baird, FNP-C, a new cardiology nurse practitioner, to their team. Originally from Brunswick County, she now lives in Bracey. With more than 25 years in nursing, Baird brings a wide range of experience to VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital

“I’ve always wanted to work in cardiology,” Baird said. “I have an extensive background in emergency and critical care, so I have plenty of exposure with heart patients and understand the struggles they face.”

Baird is the second nurse practitioner to join the cardiology department in two years. The cardiology department has seen a 15% increase in clinic visits since last year. Baird joins Lindley Abernathy, FNP-C, Bethany Denlinger, M.D., Jayanthi N Koneru, M.D., and Michael Lenhart, M.D.

“My goal is for my patients to feel as comfortable and confident in my abilities as they are with their cardiologist,” Baird said. “In my role, I can teach patients how to understand nutrition labels, discuss medications, explain tests and make sure they have a good understanding before they leave my office.”

Cardiologists can prescribe medication to help prevent future heart attacks, but their appointment slots are limited to allow them to meet the increasing needs of the population. Nurse practitioners have longer appointment slots to allow plenty of time to explain conditions and medications, educate lifestyle changes and alleviate patient concerns.

Her patients have described Baird as friendly, approachable and down to earth. She is planning on continuing her education to earn her cardiovascular nurse practitioner credential.

“I want to be a support system for my patients,” Baird said. “I like to take care of others and love it when they leave feeling like they got with they needed.”
