Bringing state-of-the-art medical care directly to one of Virginia’s largest localities, VCU Health joined government leaders today for the celebratory groundbreaking of the Chesterfield Pavilion.

The pavilion, located at 7000 Commons Plaza in Chesterfield County, will feature an ambulatory surgery center and a medical office building, which together will provide patient-centric, comprehensive outpatient services for the Chesterfield area and beyond. With nearly 400,000 residents, Chesterfield is among Virginia’s most populous counties, and the pavilion will complement the extensive facilities that VCU Health operates in the commonwealth’s capital region.

“The Chesterfield Pavilion will enhance access to top-tier medical services, ensuring that our residents receive the high-quality care they deserve,” said Joseph P. Casey, Ph.D., Chesterfield County administrator. “VCU Health’s presence in our county is a cornerstone of this vision, bringing unparalleled expertise and innovative health care solutions to our community.”

Construction of the four-story, 100,000-square-foot complex is scheduled to begin fall 2025. The pavilion’s ambulatory surgery center will feature four operating rooms and two procedure rooms. The medical office building will include clinical space for VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center and over 45 exam and procedure rooms.

Specialty care at the Chesterfield Pavilion will be offered in oncology, gynecology, urology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and other fields. Services will include mammography, infusion, pharmacy, specialty ambulatory clinics, and more.

The range of care will offer convenience and efficiency for patients: The pavilion can be the site for medical tests, follow-up appointments, specialty care and surgical procedures – all within the same complex, and all delivered with renowned expertise of VCU Health.

“My colleagues have worked for generations to make VCU Health a nationally renowned, research-driven academic health system that is dedicated to serving all in our communities,” said Michael Rao, president of Virginia Commonwealth University and chair of the VCU Health System Authority Board of Directors. “We are honored to collaborate with the Chesterfield community to strengthen patient access to our comprehensive care through VCU Health’s new Chesterfield Pavilion. This will also expand our opportunities for research and in teaching the next generation of providers.”

The pavilion will represent an extension of a care-delivery model VCU Health has used to serve other locations.

"Bringing VCU Health to Chesterfield is important to us because many of our patients live and work in this community, and we’ve long served that area with a range of physician offices and other services," said Marlon Levy, M.D., MBA, senior vice president for VCU Health Sciences and CEO of VCU Health System. “Building upon our successful track record with our ambulatory surgery center and medical office building in Henrico, we are proud to bring the same known and trusted expertise close to home for the Chesterfield community. We look forward to continued partnership with Chesterfield County."

With more than 1,000 physicians in 200 specialties, VCU Health is committed to preserving and restoring health for all people of Virginia and beyond through innovation in service, research and education. Its clinical facilities include a Level I trauma center, one of only two NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Virginia and the only full-service children’s hospital in the Richmond region.

“We are excited to witness the groundbreaking of VCU Health’s Chesterfield Pavilion, which marks another milestone in our ongoing efforts to improve access to high-quality care for all Virginians,” said Virginia Del. Mike Cherry, whose district includes the upcoming facility. “This groundbreaking is a testament to our commitment to enhancing health outcomes across the commonwealth, and VCU Health plays a crucial role in this vision.”
