Upcoming in-person stroke talk

Every second counts when it comes to recognizing the signs and symptoms of the fifth leading cause of death in Virginia. According to Virginia Department of Health, on average around 16,600 Virginians suffer from strokes every year. VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital treated 136 cases of stroke in 2022.

As part of CMH’s commitment to improve the health of our community, the next edition of the Community Out-Reach Education (CORE) series will focus on stroke prevention, symptoms and treatment. The in-person stroke talk will be held on Wednesday, May 17, from 2 - 2:30 p.m.

Tonya Wright, R.N., stroke coordinator at VCU Health CMHTonya Wright, R.N., the stroke coordinator at CMH, will be leading the talk. CMH is a Primary Stroke Center, which means the quality of care they provide meets the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients. Wright works closely with the VCU Health Comprehensive Stroke Center at VCU Medical Center, which is a leader in stroke care, education and research and the first certified Comprehensive Stroke Center in Virginia. With 28 years of nursing experience, including stints in intensive care, surgical units and emergency departments, Wright started her career at CMH and returned to the area 10 years ago for a flexible schedule that worked with her growing family’s needs.

The CORE talk will be held in the C.A.R.E. Building in education classrooms 1113-1114, with snacks and water provided. If you can walk further distances including stairs, please park in the upper employee parking lot to save room for patients getting to appointments. The C.A.R.E. Building parking lot is also available. The C.A.R.E. Building is located next to the hospital at 1755 N. Mecklenburg Ave. in South Hill, Virginia. Please let the front desk know you are there for a talk in the education classrooms.
