The eighth annual 36 Hours for Kids Radiothon sponsored by Gilman Heating, Cooling & Plumbing was held Dec. 4 and 5, raising more than $210,000 for Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU and bringing the cumulative total to more than $1 million. Broadcast live from the Children’s Pavilion on Entercom Richmond stations MIX 98.1, Q94, 1140 WRVA, BIG 98.5 and 106.5 The BEAT as well as NBC 12, the event included interviews with more than 25 families and assistance from more than 80 volunteers.

Carrie Todd, senior vice president, Entercom Richmond, has been part of the Radiothon since it began supporting CHoR.

“We liked having the money stay in our community,” Carrie said of the reason for benefiting CHoR. “It is relevant to our listeners because the hospital is in their backyard. Everyone knows someone who has been touched by CHoR.”

On Aug. 16, 2018, Carrie and her husband, Monte, became one of those families helped by CHoR when their then 11-year-old son, Campbell, was hit in the head with a golf ball. Campbell, who fractured his skull and had bleeding in his brain, was flown by helicopter to CHoR where he was immediately taken into surgery.

“He had a matter of time to get to the hospital,” Carrie recalled. “It was very, very scary.”

Campbell spent 10 days at CHoR and has since made a full recovery. The family’s personal connection now makes participating in the Radiothon more meaningful.

“I never realized we would need CHoR,” Carrie said. “Now I view the hospital team as the people who saved my son’s life.”

Campbell Todd thanked two of his CHoR team members for helping him make a full recovery following a skull fracture in 2018.
