New procedures, treatments for essential tremor, hernias and the heart at June Lewis Ginter sessions

Wednesday, June 7 Shedding light on Essential Tremor: Today’s treatments and how discoveries are creating hope Essential Tremor is a progressive and potentially disabling movement disorder that affects millions of Americans of all ages. However, new medical breakthroughs are providing hopeful, effective treatment options to patients affected by this disease. Join Jonathan Snider, M.D., a movement disorder specialist at the VCU Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center, as he reviews known causes and features of this condition, what medications and advanced surgical procedures are currently available to manage symptoms, and possible new discoveries. Wednesday, June 14 Herniology: The new era of hernia surgery at VCU More than 1 million hernia operations are performed annually in the United States. Hernias can be disabling and disfiguring for patients, and challenging for surgeons. Levi Procter, M.D. and Jennifer Salluzzo, M.D. will be discussing the new VCU Health Hernia Program. The program’s goal is to provide comprehensive and collaborative care for hernia patients by physicians who specialize in hernia surgery. Drs. Procter and Salluzzo will review the spectrum of hernia pathology, from basic hernias and repair to more advanced abdominal wall reconstruction. Thursday, June 29 The Future of Cardiology at VCU Health: The latest breakthroughs improving heart care How are complicated heart conditions treated at VCU Health? Join Kenneth Ellenbogen, M.D., chair of the VCU Division of Cardiology, and Vigneshwar Kasirajan, M.D., chair of the VCU Department of Surgery, for a discussion on new procedures and treatments being used for conditions such as mitral valve disorders and atrial fibrillation. They will also discuss the future of the VCU Health Pauley Heart Center and the use of Micra, the world’s smallest pacemaker.
