After serving in the leadership role in an interim capacity, Heather Masters, M.D., MSHA, SFHM, FACP, has been promoted to serve as the new chief medical officer (CMO) of VCU Medical Center.

Before stepping in as the interim CMO, she served as the associate chief medical officer of clinical operations and a Senior Physician on Call at VCU Medical Center, as well as medical director of the One Call Center. Masters is also an associate professor and academic hospitalist in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.

As a key member of the VCU Health leadership team, the CMO works to support the health system’s strategic plan while creating a culture of respect, mutual support, and extraordinary quality and service. Masters will primarily be responsible for leading and implementing the clinical direction of the medical center – working closely with leaders across the health system to ensure patients receive high-quality medical care.

In addition to these duties, Masters will serve as associate dean for clinical activities at VCU School of Medicine. In this role, she will be a key liaison with the School of Medicine and is accountable for integrating the educational and clinical missions of the medical center.

Masters also served as the project lead of the Operation Rebound Inpatient Capacity and Utilization workgroup, a physician lead for the COVID-19 Operations Group and a business owner for the Vision by Design, Throughput and Capacity workstream. She’s also the recipient of several ‘Top Doc’ awards from Richmond Magazine. Masters earned her Doctor of Medicine and Master of Science in Health Administration from VCU and completed her residency at VCU Medical Center.
