Kohl’s Grant Supports Hospital’s Asthma Control Efforts
September 27, 2017Children’s Hospital Foundation recently received a two-year, $250,000 grant from Kohl’s to support Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s (CHoR) You Can Control Asthma Now (UCAN) program. The grant will be used to support the program’s efforts to fund UCAN’s nurse program manager and social worker positions, provide resources and assistance for patients and families, and promote community outreach efforts to create awareness of the service in the Richmond community.
UCAN’s social worker and nurse program manager work with patients enrolled in the program and help identify new patients who would benefit from the education, community resources and support offered through the service. They also ensure that every patient has an asthma action plan that is reviewed at least annually and help identify and address barriers such as transportation, housing, financial, insurance and legal issues that may impede access to care.
From 2009-2017, Kohl’s partnered with Children’s Hospital Foundation to support Kohl’s Dental Outreach Program, an initiative that provided dental health tips to more than 112,000 area first graders during the program’s eight years. Kohl’s associate volunteers also regularly support Children’s Hospital Foundation events including the Bowl-A-Thon, Four Mile Fun Run, Fire Prevention Day, Health & Safety Day and other philanthropic initiatives.
