Colon, or colorectal cancer, is the second most common cancer in the United States, affecting 140,000 people annually and causing 60,000 deaths.  That’s a staggering figure when you consider the disease is highly treatable if caught in the early stages.  Who is at risk for colon cancer?  How does colon cancer start?  What are symptoms of colon cancer?  How is colon cancer treated?

If you are seeking answers to questions like these you should attend March’s C.O.R.E. (Community Out-Reach Education) Program at VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital to learn more about colorectal cancer.

This FREE program will be on Wednesday, March 21st at 4:00 p.m. in the VCU Health CMH Education Center inside the new C.A.R.E. Building located at 1755 N. Mecklenburg Avenue in South Hill.

Dr. Khalid Matin will be the speaker for the event.  Dr. Matin’s specialty is Hematology/Oncology.  He is the medical director of community oncology and clinical research affiliations at VCU Massey Cancer Center and an associate professor in the Division of hematology, Oncology and Palliative Care, Department of Internal Medicine, at the VCU School of Medicine.  A board certified medical oncologist and clinical researcher, Dr. Matin is an expert in the study and treatment of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers and currently sees patients at the Hendrick Cancer & Rehab Center in South Hill.
