In preparation for consolidating its entire collection to its Historic Tredegar location, the American Civil War Museum has sold its museum building and part of its land at 1201 E. Clay St. to the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System. The operations of the White House of the Confederacy will continue and are not affected by the sale of the museum property.

The purchase, finalized today, also includes terms for the VCU Health System to lease the building to the museum for two years while the new building at the museum’s Tredegar location is completed to host the entire collection and new galleries.

Purchase price of the 31,000 square-foot building on about .6 acres is $6.25 million.

The property is adjacent to the VCU Medical Center’s Emergency Department. The building is being considered by the health system for use as an educational and training space for employees, physicians and students, as well as temporary administrative space for its employees.
