All VCU Health System hospitals receive national recognition for exceptional patient care

On their 2023 Hospital Quality Star Ratings, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) awarded VCU Medical Center, VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital and VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital 4-out-of-5 stars, highlighting continued improvement and dedication to exceptional patient care throughout the health system.

With the goal of helping patients and their caregivers easily compare hospitals, CMS developed their rating system based on data gathered in 5 key areas:

  • timely and effective care
  • patient experience
  • readmission
  • safety of care
  • mortality

"We are immensely proud of our teams at VCU Medical Center, VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital, and VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital,” said Marlon Levy, M.D., senior vice president for Virginia Commonwealth University Health Sciences and interim CEO of VCU Health System. “This achievement is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our dedicated healthcare teams who consistently deliver exceptional patient-centered care.”

26% of hospitals in the country achieved a four-star rating this year, 29% received three stars. The 4-star rating is an improvement from each hospital’s 3-star rating in 2022.
