Welcome to the Virginia Commonwealth University Hume-Lee Transplant Center, where our commitment to transplantation is unsurpassed. Our rich and innovative history began in 1957, when the Medical College of Virginia completed the first organ transplant in Virginia and shortly after created the nation's first Clinical Transplant Program. As we pioneered history in transplantation, we also set the foundation for our future as a leading transplant center.
Our mission of providing the best in patient care, research and education has allowed us to maintain our position as a leading authority in all aspects of solid organ transplantation. The dedication of our staff has helped our program grow and develop into one that’s far more advanced than anyone thought possible just 50 years ago.
Today, we are one of the busiest transplant programs in the nation, known for superior patient outcomes that are made possible by our top-tier transplant physicians and surgeons, our dedicated laboratories, and our award-winning nursing staff.
I invite you to learn more about what we are doing in transplantation. Our comprehensive transplant programs, research and fellowship programs are just a few of the reasons we are proud to say that one of the top solid organ abdominal transplant programs in the world is right here at the VCU Medical Center.
Please do not hesitate to contact us at (804) 828-4104 if you would like additional information or to make an appointment.
Another life-saving year! 2023 was a record-breaking year for VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center in terms of quantity of transplants per organ. An organ transplant is a life saved! 577 Total organs transplanted in 2023: 12 Pancreas, 43 Heart, 205 Liver and 317 Kidney.
In 2022, our Heart Failure Disease Management Team at VCU Health was awarded the Outstanding Heart Failure Care Team Award by the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA). Dealing with every aspect of heart failure from diagnosis to treatment, our Heart Failure Disease Management Team is made up of the inpatient heart failure navigator team, the outpatient heart failure APPs, and the heart failure nurse coordinators. As it recognizes a comprehensive heart failure disease management team offered in and out of the hospital, this HFSA award is a result of the collaborative efforts of the teammates working across the various parts of our heart failure team.
