About the Medical-Legal Partnership
A medical-legal partnership (MLP) is a collaboration between legal and health care professionals to help patients resolve social and environmental factors that contribute to health disparities and have a remedy in civil law. More than 450 health care institutions in 49 states have adopted the MLP model of co-locating medical and legal services to address unmet civil legal needs for vulnerable patients.
Experiencing Rapid Growth
The MLP at VCU Health was created in 2018 with a vision to create a safer, healthier, more equitable community through access to justice. We ensure patient health remains the central focus by integrating our work with the patients’ clinical teams.
When the program was founded, we offered services to two patient populations – cancer patients treated at Massey Cancer Center and children and families treated at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR). In less than five years, our program has expanded to cover eight additional programs and locations, including:
- CHoR Brook Road
- CHoR Pavilion & Inpatient Tower
- Complex Care Clinic
- Emergency Department
- Hayes E. Willis Health Center
- Massey Cancer Center
- Ryan White Program
- Sickle Cell Program
- VCU’s Health Hub at 25th
- Virginia Treatment Center for Children
Making Outreach Possible
Thanks to our generous funders, we’re improving patients’ lives in ways that even the best medical care can’t. Donations from these organizations have helped us build—and grow—the MLP program:
- Dominion Energy
- The Herndon Foundation
- The MCV Foundation
- The Virginia Sargeant Reynolds Foundation
Help us help others
We’re committed to making an even greater impact in the years ahead. Donations of any amount can go a long way toward helping us provide free legal services to those who need them.
