Empowering Healthcare: Nurse Practitioner Randi Thompson Brings a Dedication to Patient Well-being and Holistic Care
Randi Thompson, AGPCNP, is a healthcare professional whose passion lies in enhancing patient education and preventative care. With more than a decade of experience as a nurse in critical care settings, Randi brings a unique perspective to her role at VCU Health. Her commitment to improving health outcomes and her emphasis on patient empowerment make her a valuable asset to the medical community.
Randi was drawn to VCU Health by its commitment to collaboration across specialties and its unwavering dedication to serving Richmond and Central Virginia. She sees the potential for her skills to flourish in an environment that values community engagement and service.
Having spent considerable time in Intensive Care Unit settings for patients with advanced stages of critical illness, Randi brings special attention to preventative care in her role at VCU Health. She strongly emphasizes patient education and believes informed patients are better equipped to manage their own health. Her experience with critical cases gives her a deep appreciation of the importance of proactive measures.
Drawing on her years of experience, Randi primarily focuses on caring for kidney transplant patients before and after their transplants. She guides them through understanding their medications, managing conditions contributing to kidney disease and aiding in their overall well-being. She treats patients who have a wide range of conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, transplant rejection and infections. Her approach is personalized, recognizing that each patient's journey is unique.
The choice of specializing in kidney transplant care as an advanced practice provider was a natural progression for Randi given her background as an ICU nurse.
“In my years as a healthcare provider, my motivation remains rooted in helping patients achieve their best possible health outcomes tailored to their individual circumstances. Compassion is the cornerstone,” Randi says.
The field of nephrology and transplant medicine is ever-evolving with new data and research that Randi incorporates into her practice. Patients she works with often have complex medical histories and require meticulous management of multiple high-risk medications. That complexity drives her to continuously refine her skills and provide comprehensive care.
“Success demands continuous education and staying abreast of advancements in the transplant and kidney disease field,” she says. “I believe in building partnerships with my patients. By meeting them where they are on the health spectrum, we can collaborate to develop healthy habits and achieve their healthcare goals.”
Outside work, Randi enjoys gardening, paddle boarding, and spending time with friends and family. With her commitment to education and empowerment, Randi continues to make a positive impact on the lives of her patients at VCU Health.
Advice to Patients: “Take things one day at a time. Focus on small changes you can make in your day to day life to improve your medical conditions. Whether this is setting alarms to remember to take medications or eliminating one food at a time from your diet, these small changes add up over time to create big change.”
