Biography
A broadly trained surgeon with a focus on plastic and reconstructive procedures
For patients facing complex medical challenges due to burns, soft tissue loss after trauma or cancer, massive weight loss or critical injury, Prabu Senthil-Kumar, M.D. is ready.
A plastic and reconstructive surgeon with a background in burn and surgical critical care, Senthil-Kumar treats patients with burn wounds and burn scars, complex wounds that require advanced procedures such as “free flaps,” and body contouring after significant weight loss. He also performs breast-related procedures such as breast reduction and reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy.
“My commitment is to a holistic approach where I aim to treat the patient as a whole, not merely address their clinical issue,” says Senthil-Kumar. “I aim to ensure that each patient experiences personalized care throughout their treatment journey.”
Senthil-Kumar joined VCU Health after fellowships in burn, critical care, and plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He also did a plastic and reconstructive surgery research fellowship at Harvard Medical School at Massachusetts General Hospital.
“Leveraging my research fellowship background and broad clinical training, I am enthusiastic about conducting research aimed at enhancing outcomes for burn patients and advancing the field of reconstruction — and doing it here at VCU,” he says. “VCU Health is a highly reputable healthcare system known for outstanding infrastructure, exceptional support staff, and state-of-the-art technologies that empower healthcare professionals to provide cutting-edge treatments to patients with complex needs.”
Advice to patients: “Actively engage in your own healthcare journey. Educate yourself about your disease, follow good lifestyle choices, establish a support system, and follow medical advice. And be patient with yourself and the process since healing and recovery take time. Your healthcare is a partnership between you and your healthcare team, and your active involvement can greatly contribute to the success of your treatment and overall well-being.”
