Clinical excellence at VCU Medical Center has been achieved in part through the talents of its more than 3,700 Registered Nurses (RNs), inclusive of 465 Advance Practice Registered Nurses. Under the leadership of Tina Mammone, PhD, RN, FACHE, NEA-BC, Chief Nurse Executive, Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, Chief Nursing Officer, VCU Medical Center, the educational preparation of its Nursing workforce has sustained excellence. In 2017, VCU Medical Center met the 2020 Institute of Medicine national directive for a workforce with 80% of the registered nurses with a baccalaureate degree or higher in nursing, with the most recent rate at 84%. In addition to Nursing’s educational achievements, 66% of its eligible nurses have attained professional certification.

Nurses at all levels at VCU Medical Center nurses at all levels have been recipients of numerous notable honors and awards for excellence in patient care. A sample includes:

  • American College of Nurse-Midwives awards the Triple Aim Best Practice designation to VCU Medical Center’s Certified Nurse Midwives for improving the patient experience, reducing the cost of care, and improving health.
  • American Nurse Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program® designation (2006, 2011, 2016, 2020)
  • American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Beacon Award for Excellence. Honorees in the past four years include the following: Security Care Unit, Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, Acute Care Surgery, Adult Psychiatry, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Medical Surgical Care Unit, Gumenick Suites, Coronary Intensive Care Unit, Comprehensive Medicine Unit, & Supplemental Staffing
  • Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses: Patients, families and co-workers have nominated over 300 nurses monthly with 155 winners since program inception. Two winners are selected monthly. Additional DAISY Awards given at VCU Medical Center include:
    • Nurse Leader: The DAISY Nurse Leader Award recognizes a Nurse Leader for role modeling and enhancing the professional image of nursing and creating an environment of trust and compassion. Since additional of the Nurse Leader DAISY in 2018, 6 winners have been selected and honored.
    • Lifetime Achievement Award: The Daisy Lifetime Achievement Award, an honor to recognize a nurse for devotion to compassionate care of others, was adopted at VCU Medical Center in 2019 and 4 nurses have received this recognition since that time.
    • Team: The Daisy Team Award, an honor to recognize collaboration of two or more people, led by a nurse, was adopted at VCU Medical Center in 2014 and 14 exceptional teams have received this recognition since that time. 
  • Heart Failure Society of America awards the Heart Failure Disease Management Team at VCU Health the 2022 Outstanding Heart Failure Team Award.
  • Richmond Magazine’s Top Docs Awards given to six (6) advanced practice registered nurses in 2022.
  • Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association’s Virginians Speak Up for Safety Award
  • Q1 2023: Honorable mention given to four (4) nurses.
  • Q4 2023: Honorable mention given to one (1) nurse.
  • Virginia Nurses Association: Since 2020, 14 VCU Medical Center nurses have received awards for nursing leadership, safety, and exceptional patient outcomes.
