When to see an audiologist

An audiologist can help with any level of hearing loss. In the United States, 1 in 8 people age 12 and older have some level of hearing loss in both ears (also known as bilateral hearing loss). Hearing loss affects many aspects of life, including how you communicate.

Consider making an audiology appointment if:

  • You ask others to repeat themselves more often.
  • You think people are mumbling when they speak.
  • You find it harder to hear with background noise.
  • You increase the volume on your radio or television.
  • You experience a ringing, humming or buzzing in your ears (called tinnitus).

Your first hearing test

Your first audiology appointment is an evaluation visit and follows these basic steps:

  1. Answer questions about your medical history.
  2. Meet with your audiologist, who explains what to expect during the hearing test.
  3. Complete the hearing test.
  4. Review test results and recommendations with your audiologist.
  5. Schedule follow-up visits as needed.

Health insurance information

Your health insurance plan may or may not cover the cost of your audiology services, such as hearing aids. As a patient, you’re responsible for reviewing your plan’s coverage. Your insurance plan may require an authorization before your visit with us. We encourage you to speak with your insurance provider if you have any questions about your plan.

We also see patients who don’t have insurance. Payments can be made with a credit card, check or cash.
