WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU
Patients with an impacted United Healthcare Medicare Advantage plan (listed above) will be “out of network” effective September 15, 2025.
Being out of network means access to our health care services will be impacted because United Healthcare may not pay for medical care at VCU Health, which could result in higher out-of-pocket costs for patients.
To avoid higher out-of-pocket costs, patients with an impacted United Healthcare Medicare Advantage plan need to take action to avoid potentially paying more for their health care services at VCU Health.
Options include:
- Requesting to switch plans with the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid due to “Disruption of Care.”
- To discuss your options, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) (TTY 1-877-486-2048).
- You can also contact the Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP) at 1-800-552-3402. Trained volunteers can assist you with questions.
- Submitting a request to United Healthcare for a “Continuity of Care” exception due to ongoing treatment.
- Patients need to contact United Healthcare to submit a request by calling the member services phone number listed on their insurance card
- Transferring care to a non-VCU Health provider. Patients should contact United Healthcare for a list of in-network providers.
- Switching to another Medicare Advantage plan during the annual open enrollment period, which takes place between October 15 and December 7, 2025. *New plans do not take effect until January 1, 2026.
